Colle Cable Car — Far from the Madding Crowd

In Kohlern, time seems to have stood still. The small mountain village lies at about 1100 metres above sea level and is a calming green refuge for all those seeking to escape the bustle of the city.

The wealthy residents of Bolzano discovered this scenic place for themselves over 100 years ago and — although Kohlern could only be reached by foot or via oxcart back then — started to build mansions for their summer retreat. It was the business-minded innkeeper Josef Staffler who recognized the potential of this picturesque area and decided to foster tourism by developing a new means of transportation: a cable car.
